Every year, Baltimore's American Visionary Art Museum hosts Mondo Exotica, the most festive fancy dress ball in the land. In 2005, the theme was Aquarama, and colorful sea creatures danced through the night. While some mundanes arrived with just a captain's hat, most folks did much better. The best costumes were hand-made, and not the slightest bit ordinary. For this event, fish-shaped throw pillows were transformed into evening gowns, bubble wrap became jellyfish, mono-finned mermaids avoided the stairs, spraypaint adorned many a body, and creativity reigned. All of these photos were taken by Tom Jones. If you were there and would like a print, let me know.
AVAM brought in Squonk Opera, which created original musical performance art just for the occasion:
What else does AVAM do? They host the Kinetic Sculpture Race, and of course they also are a great Museum.
